RT - 6/5/18 Badge Awarded 6//18 NSPHi, Richard. I am Nerisa, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks.
I appreciate you for being able to start a collection that you have posted in your learning product, however, I suggest that you continue to search for resources at Participate collection because you will be amazed of the many significant articles and work of other teachers related to the subject that you have chosen to tackle for this module. There are ample resources and tools that you can refer to from time to time when needed to enrich your global application in your teaching and learning activities with your students. You can add resources by clicking the "red plus" or you may use the search feature at Participate to add resources to your stack. Please go back sometime to your dashboard and update your collection in this module. On top of everything, I admired you for being able to choose this interesting topic for a good cause mainly to preserve our planet and or take care of our environment. I like that you were able to lead your students successfully to explore and investigate what they can do to help take care of the environment and making it safe by learning how another country tries to eliminate plastic with edible cutlery. I loved the creativity of your students who were able to think about inventing edible cups made of multiple flavors such as sugar, cherry, and plain edible cups which are of course edible and taste like candy! I like the ideas that they can be used for a week, they have to be refrigerated and if you don’t want to eat it, you can crush it up and it will decompose on its own within 2 weeks which was really an astounding action to save our planet, Earth. I was also wondering if you were able to dig deeper some more on what they can do with the non-biodegradable materials particularly plastic that is all around us that were damaging our environment. I bet that many of your students were able to conduct an introspection into their lives to think intensely about how to take care others and develop empathy toward people around the world and be curious about what they can do to save the Earth and have a new mindset to advocate for a good cause to save our planet. I am glad to hear that this activity had helped you eliminate your issue with rigor in the class or somehow strengthen your rigor with your teaching and learning activities with your students. Rigor doesn't simply mean giving students more or harder work. Instead, it's the result of work that challenges students' thinking in new and interesting ways. I salute you for being able to highlight and make it possible to encourage your students to put forth a considerable effort to think about what they can do to make a difference and that is a significant growth mindset! Good job, Richard! Congratulations! I am glad to award you a badge for this module. Please continue to mold your students to develop their global competencies. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks. You have created a basic collection that was similar to one of the participants that I have reviewed already. Please go back to your Participate dashboard to visit your collection in this module and click the "red plus" symbol to add your lesson plan, student work and student reflection or you may edit the links that you have provided in your learning product. I suggest that you keep on searching using the Participate collection because there are sufficient resources that you can add to your stack to build a strong collection. I was also wondering if you were working collaboratively with other teachers in your grade or if you have made this lesson or activity as a school's joint effort to comply the requirements of this course because I have seen from one of the participants with the same collection as yours. Anyway, there is no problem with me I just need to access your lesson plan, student work, and student reflection. Thanks! Again, please go back to your google doc and check the privacy of your lesson plan because I can't access it due to restrictions. Make sure to review the permission status and share it with "Anyone who has the link can view" so that I can start with the review. On the other hand, please check also the links for your student work and student reflection that you have posted in your learning product or just upload them into your collection because it doesn't seem to be the right link. Please let me know if you have questions. I will be here to support you. Thanks! Please check with your other kindergarten teacher because I have awarded this module already. You may check or adopt the collection using the link below because she has the complete collection of lesson plan, student work and student reflection which were accessible in her stack. Please let me know if you have questions and I will be here to support you. Thanks! https://www.participate.com/collections/mary-beth-hudson-ask-about-the-world-using-inquiry-to-drive-academic-and-global-learning/594977c9-9ace-4e58-a64e-090f73e12c04 You said that this activity was a collaborative effort with all kindergarten teachers in order to comply with this module. I find the resources complete in one of the participants that you said you had worked with for this module. This is an interesting topic about homes around the world for the kids in your classroom. I can imagine the excitement and the fun they have when they were able to use the same resources to create a model of a house using legos, lincoln logs, scrap paper, play dough, etc. Have you allowed them also to explore and investigate other homes around the world using several resources like videos and picture books especially the homes from tropical countries or maybe in the underdeveloped countries where houses are really unique and one of a kind so that you can stimulate their curiosity more deeply and eventually develop an intercultural knowledge and understanding and empathy toward other people around the world who may not be as fortunate as the people here in the United States. I hope that you were able to lead your students successfully to be able to create a model that represent their homes or the homes that they have studied and investigated in this lesson as shown in your student work and student reflection. This is a powerful lesson that would uncover various possibilities of cultural representation of people around the world by looking at how their houses were built and what does their homes symbolize to speak about their heritage. Many people around the world could not even afford to build a strong foundation for their houses because they don't have the means to do it. Therefore, it doesn't matter at all if it's not safe to live in their houses they still stayed there just like those that hardly withstand in the midst of the storm in many countries around the world. In this case, it would be better to expose them to some scenarios of home situations or circumstances so that you can promote empathy to your students as it relates to homes around the world when you dig deeper and move outside the box to be able to enhance the global competencies of your students. There is no easy way to adapt completely to become more accustomed to any global competency lessons but I believe that practice and being consistent and persistent with everything you do will also be critical to promoting your students' intercultural knowledge and understanding, curiosity, and empathy with people around the world. You have to continue to allow your students to conduct an introspection of their lives to be able to connect themselves and be continue to be curious about things they never heard before and develop self-awareness as they unravel the intricacies of the diversity of culture and traditions around the world. Congratulations! I would like to award you a badge for this module. Please continue to mold your students to develop their global competencies. |
BH - 6/4/18 Badge Awarded 6/7/18 NSPHi, Brittany. I am Nerisa, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks. You have started a collection to support you with your lesson in this module. I find valuable resources that you can use for your heritage project and I hope you have been using them to get to know your students better. We would appreciate it very much if you can also upload your lesson plan, student work and student reflection in your stack. Thanks. Currently, I was able to view your lesson plan and student reflection but I was unable to access your student work so please check the privacy of your student work and share it with "Anyone who has the link can view". Thanks. Please check it again because I was still unable to view it. You may go back to your google doc for your student work and share it with "Anyone who has link can view" so that I can proceed with the review. Thanks! It was evident in your student work and student reflection that you have allowed your students to explore and investigate their own roots or where they came from originally before coming to the United States. It gave them an opportunity to discover more of their personal interests, individuality or background and eventually conduct and introspection into their lives on how to behave themselves in the society when confronted with diverse people in the community where they live and the world in general. I was wondering if you were able to give your students a chance to participate in an open discussion about some traditions or practices that your students have from other countries other than food, places, and celebrations observed that might be comparable or unique in terms of customs or traditions that had been handed down from generations to generations. I am also pleased that you were able to conduct a high engagement lesson with your students and have a strong desire to improve your practice so that you will be able to know more about your students. I suggest that you continue to find ways to strengthen your teaching and learning activities to enhance the global competencies of your students so that they will also become better global citizens in the days ahead. Please continue to explore the Participate collection so that you can create sufficient resources to continue to support you with your next courses or module that you plan to take in the future. Congratulations! I would like to award you a badge for this module. Good job, Brittany! ED - 6/4/18 Badge Awarded 6/4/18 NSPHello, Elizabeth. I am Nerisa, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for You Belong Here: Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning in a Global Classroom. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. I was unable to view the link to your collection but I have seen your collection about Africa in your profile. I suggest that you continue to increase your resources in this module by creating a substantial collection that you can refer from time to time to support you with your global pursuits. There are sufficient resources that you can add by clicking on the "red plus" sign to add a link or file or you may use the search feature to look for more resources that will positively help you improve your global teaching and learning activities with your students. It was evident in your student work and student reflection that you were able to lead your students to explore and investigate the country of Somalia as one of the countries of Africa which is also very indispensable for your students to uncover the Somali's cultural heritage. It gave your students sufficient opportunities to be curious about their own culture that was also linked significantly with the history of African people throughout the world. There were many things that your students can discover as they study the country and find out their own roots for African-American. In culture, language, and way of life, the people of Somalia, northeastern Kenya, the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, and the southern part of Djibouti are mainly one homogeneous group. Moreover, I have learned that Somalia has a rich oral tradition that made every Somali as a walking repository of the country’s stories, myths, traditions, and genealogies. Somali mythology dates to pre-Islamic times and includes belief in jinn, ghostly spirits, and ghouls(ghūls), treacherous shape-changing meanings, who are said to inhabit significant features of the landscape, including wells, crossroads, and burial grounds. Also, some Somalis believed that the appearance of certain stars, constellations, and eclipses can foretell everything from the coming of rain to a massacre. I hope that you were able to reveal these beliefs and traditions to your students because this is exciting and interesting for them and maybe been handed down by generations to generations by some African-American folks. I like that you were able to learn and improve your global perspective as you teach other cultures with your students. I am also glad that this has given the opportunity to broaden your students learning experience through the resources that you were able to engage in to accomplish the goal of this module. I suggest that you continue to search for more resources at Participate collection in order to strengthen the collection that will help you advance your global application. There is no easy way to adapt completely to become more accustomed to any global competency lessons but I believe that practice and being consistent and persistent with everything you do will also be critical to promoting your students' intercultural knowledge and understanding, curiosity, and empathy with people around the world. BM - 5/29/18 Badge Awarded 6/2/18 NSPHello, Brynn. I am Nerisa, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for You Belong Here: Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning in a Global Classroom. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. You have started a basic collection to help you with your lesson in this module. There are ample resources that you can add to your collection if you continue to search for materials in the Participate collection. You will be amazed how you could make use of them to improve your global practice with your students. I suggest that you keep on looking for materials to add to your stack. I like that you have given opportunities to your students to explore and investigate various holiday traditions around the world that is very crucial to develop intercultural knowledge and understanding about people's diverse culture and traditions. Have you allowed them to dig deeper and use their imagination of how people around the world celebrated the different holidays and traditions when they don't have enough food to prepare at the table? Does it matter for other people to celebrate the holidays without so many preparations and adornments? Do you think they were still having it with gusto? These are some of the questions that you can look back some time to find how your students would respond and be curious about so that they can explore more possibilities to understand and develop empathy with other people around the world. The holiday traditions for some people are a symbol of hope, devotion, and expression of life from the past, present and in the future. It was evident in your student work and student reflection that you have provided your students enough opportunities to compare the Christmas holiday in the United States with other countries using T-chart. I can tell that you have successfully led them what to focus on their research which was very significant to uncover the unique as well as the intricacies of the celebration in the different countries around the world. I am glad that your students had fun while learning the holiday traditions in the different countries around the world that were covered by their research. It was so amazing that they have realized that people in other countries also celebrated the same or similar holiday traditions in a unique way as demonstrated in food, decorations, holiday greetings and other practices. Perhaps you can also allow them to discover some situations or circumstances where your students can connect themselves and conduct an introspection of their lives so that they can develop empathy toward other people in the world who may not have the chance or capacity to enjoy themselves during the holidays because of some present situations or circumstances. Congratulations! I would like to award you a badge for this module. Good job, Brynn! |
MBH - 5/29/18 Badge Awarded 6/2/18 NSPHi, Mary Beth. I am Nerisa, a member of the peer review team for Participate. I work at the elementary school here in North Carolina. I will be reviewing your Learning Product for Ask About the World: Global Inquiry. I am looking forward to working with you in this module. Thanks.
You have created a basic collection to support your objective in this module. I have seen valuable resources about the homes around the world that were relevant to help you achieve the goal in this recitation. I recommend that you keep on searching using the Participate collection because there are sufficient resources that you can add to your stack to build a strong collection. I was wondering if you were working collaboratively with other teachers in your grade or if you have made this lesson or activity as a school's joint effort to comply the requirements of this course. I have seen several other participants who submitted somewhat the same sources but I have to go back to them and ask for specifications because I don't have easy access to their works or the documents presented in their learning product were unviewable. So, your feedback will greatly help me assess their works submitted in this module. I also noticed that you didn't respond to the self-assessment parts of the lesson plan. I suggest that you go back to it also and reflect how this lesson will support academic learning and the development of global competencies. I find this lesson about homes around the world very interesting to the kids in your classroom. I can imagine the excitement and the fun they have when they use the resources you have mentioned to create a model of a house using legos, lincoln logs, scrap paper, play dough, etc. Have you allow them to explore and investigate other homes around the world using several resources like videos and picture books especially the homes from tropical countries or maybe in the underdeveloped countries where houses are really unique and one of a kind so that you can stimulate their curiosity more deeply and ultimately develop an intercultural knowledge and understanding and empathy toward other people around the world who may not be as fortunate as the people here in the United States. I am pleased that your students have enjoyed the inquiry process that you have conducted in your classroom as well as their hands-on learning experience in using those manipulatives to create the home models. I love to hear from you when I was reading the final reflection that you want to convey to your students your personal goal of traveling to the 7 wonders of the world so that you can share to them your thoughts and personal perspectives with your first-hand experience. I can't wait for you to make that happen. I believe that you will become a vital advocate to promote a deeper knowledge and understanding of the people's underlying culture and traditions in the places that you will be visiting in the coming days ahead. Congratulations! I would like to award you a badge for this module. Good job, Mary Beth! |
